How pip value is calculated
A pip is the second-to-last decimal in most pairs (e.g., 0.0001 in EURUSD) and the second decimal in JPY pairs (0.01 in USDJPY). The dollar value of one pip is:
Pip value (in quote currency) = pip size × units traded
For pairs where the quote currency is USD (EURUSD, GBPUSD, etc.), a one-pip move on a standard lot (100,000 units) is exactly $10 — that's where the "$10/pip" rule of thumb comes from.
For pairs where USD is the base (USDJPY, USDCHF, USDCAD), the pip value in USD is divided by the price. For cross pairs (EURJPY, GBPJPY), pip value in USD is computed via the appropriate cross rate. This calculator approximates by using the entered quote price; for production sizing, your broker's platform will give you the exact figure.
